Generic Conventions in Film Openings

Generic Conventions are the features shown by texts that allow them to be put into a specific genre. For example, almost all Westerns use the Iconography of cowboy hats, six shooters, horses and spurs to place them in their genre.

Animation-
Toy Story
You are able to find out exactly what this film is going to be like and what the content of this film is going to look like. you are able to find this out by the bright colours associated with the film which is usually associated with little children as the bright vibrant colours encourage the to watch the film. You are also able to see who the films target audience is by the non-diegetic music used in the film opening ("you've got a friend in me"). Another sign of who their target audience is is the location of where the film is set which is in a child's bedroom.

Romance-
The Vow
They will do anything for love, couple, slow paced, calm, kiss, in love.

Thriller-
The shining
Sinister music, non-diegetic music, open landscape, following car, isolated.

Thriller/Crime-
Drive
Pink, girly titles, dark, low key, not much information is given away, 2 characters.

Comedy-
Superbad
Jolly song/ catchy tune, comedic dancing, bright colours.

Horror-
Dawn of the dead
Blood, screams, zombie clips, dull colours, song, scared of something calling around.

This is going to help me in creating my film as I am able to see what a successful film with this genre looks like. This will also help me as I am able to see what audiences expect from a specific genre.
